Madonna Anna Hoefling, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home near Hinton, IA on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on November 9, 1940, in rural Sioux City, IA, she was the seventh of nine children to Frank James and Rose Elizabeth (Gruber) Barkley. Madonna grew up near Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School with the Class of 1959.
On June 11, 1960, Madonna was united in marriage to Vincent "Vince" L. Hoefling at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Leeds. Together, they raised eight children who brought boundless joy to her life. The family established their home east of Leeds before moving to their farmstead near Hinton in 1971. Friends and family often heard her say, "I've got it all right here," reflecting her appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Madonna’s life revolved around her family, whom she dedicated herself to in every possible way. She often expressed that her children were her best friends.
A woman of quiet strength, Madonna held a profound Catholic faith that played a significant role in her life. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellendale, where she generously volunteered and supported the parish in many roles. Among her many contributions, she helped prepare the church’s famous apple pies for parish dinners. Her commitment to community was further exemplified as she actively participated in her children’s 4-H and school activities, investing her time and energy into their endeavors. As many know, she had a good balance and would still enjoy life's simple pleasures.
Her personality was marked by an easygoing nature, a wonderful sense of humor, and a genuine interest in others. She was, above all, a truly kind person. Madonna had a young heart and embraced life with curiosity. She cherished her time outdoors, spending countless hours gardening, canning, and immersing herself in nature’s treasures and wonders. In addition to these hobbies, she loved reading, cooking, sewing, and spending quiet moments reflecting beneath the family oak tree—simple pleasures that contributed to the warmth and closeness of her family life.
Madonna is survived by her eight children: Gail (John) Eliades, Kevin Hoefling, Kirk Hoefling, Kenny (Bridget) Hoefling, Cathy (Rick) Wegher, Duane "Bucko" Hoefling, Scott (Pam) Hoefling, and Kyle (Sarah) Hoefling; nineteen grandchildren: Alka, Tommy, Kurtis, Blake, Mitchell, Ross, Brandon, Cole, Elle, Jack, Myles, Cassie, Kade, Katelyn, Kimberly, Allison Anne, Jenna, Luke, and Wesley; eleven great-grandchildren; her remaining siblings: Mildred Albert, RoseMarie Messerlie, and Bill (Mary Kay) Barkley; and her sister-in-law, Celie Kafton. Additionally, she is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vincent "Vince," who passed away on March 21, 2021, as well as her siblings and their spouses: John, Jim, Tom, Mary, and George.
Madonna will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her faith, and her contributions to both her church and community.
A visitation will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (Ellendale) rural Merrill, IA, on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass at 10:30 AM.
