Lucy was born March 10, 1930, in Anthon, Iowa to August and Lillie (Hansen) Sachau. She moved with her family to Sioux City in 1937, lived in the South Bottoms and maintained life-long friendships from that era. She graduated in 1947 from Central High School. After graduating, she worked at Johnson Café where she met local KSCJ radio newscaster, Millord Miller.
She married Millord C. Miller, January 29, 1949, in Sioux City. He died January 21, 1977. She married John Q. Harris, January 5, 1992, in Sioux City. He died April 8, 2002.
Lucy began working for the Jewish Federation in 1949 and then as a secretary at Missouri Valley Machinery before joining Jewel Tea in 1954. She transferred to Jewel Tea in Anaheim, California, when the family moved to Garden Grove, California in 1957. They returned in 1959 to Sioux City where she worked as a bookkeeper for Community Chest.
Lucy joined Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City (which became St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center n/k/a UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s) where she started as a Posting-Machine Operator in the Business Office, rising through the ranks to Business Office Manager from 1964 to 1982. She then held the position of Director of Development there from 1982 until 1991. She was instrumental in bringing the Children’s Miracle Network to St. Luke’s in 1989. Then, she was recruited to join Goodwill Industries/Wall Street Mission, where she served as Vice-President of Development until her retirement in 1993.
She attended classes at Western Iowa Tech Community College and participated in a Project Assessment Program at Briar Cliff College (n/k/a University.) She received a certification from the Aspen Academy for Institutional Development in 1983 and a certification from William and Mary College for fund development in 1992.
Lucy served as choir director at Whitfield United Methodist Church since the early 1980’s and as organist from 2002, retiring in 2019. Her other church activities included serving as President of Ruth Circle and eventually President and later Recording Secretary of a revamped all church women’s group, Chairperson of the stewardship and permanent endowment committees, worship co-Chairperson and as a member of the Administrative Board. In addition, she worked on Whitfield’s peanut brittle crew since it originated in the 1980s.
Her other activities included serving as Chaplain of PEO Chapter MK, past President of St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Quota Club and Emerson Study Club. She was a past board member of the Siouxland Youth Chorus and St. Luke’s Nursing College. In 1991 she was nominated for a Women of Excellence Award.
‘Lucille’ means light, which she was to everyone she met. She was always there to help, especially her family. Whether it was baking thumbprint cookies at Christmas, coordinating family picnics around the summer holidays, preparing Sunday night family dinners, making her world-famous chili, you knew her love by her attention to what family and friends loved most. She knew no strangers and accepted all walks of life. Next to music, laughter was the sound she brought to those around her.
Survivors include her son Greg Miller, daughters Debby (Jerry) Munson and Julie Miller-Pranke (Greg Pranke), all of Sioux City. Grandchildren Jenny (Siju) Varghese and their son Noah of Des Moines, IA and Ryan Munson and his daughter Keely of Sioux City; brother-in-law Don Miller of Sioux City.
