Linda Ellen Johansen went to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family and her unwavering faith. A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Morningside Lutheran Church, Sioux City, IA, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately after the service. Interment will follow the luncheon at the Dakota City Cemetery.
Born on October 3, 1941, to Wesley Reed Tompkins and Violet (Olson) Tompkins, Linda spent her early years in rural Nebraska, attending country schools near Walthill. She often rode her beloved horse, Danny, to school — a fond memory that reflected her independent spirit and love of nature. She graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1960.
In 1962, Linda married the love of her life, Jan Conrad Johansen. Together they built a home filled with warmth, music, faith, and family. They were blessed with five children: Eric, Kristen, Karl, Wendy, and Adrienne.
Linda lived a life of service, creativity, and grace. She was deeply involved in her church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Choir Director, member of the church council, and teacher. She sang in the choir and played in the hand bell choir, generously sharing her musical gifts. She also sang professionally and played the harp.
Professionally, Linda worked as a secretary and legal secretary for over 20 years. At home, she was a dedicated homemaker, an excellent cook, and a talented quilter. Her garden bloomed under her care, and her kitchen was always open to family and friends.
Linda gave generously of her time and talents to many organizations, including the Bakers Dozen Extension Club, P.E.O., Schubert Club, Eastern Star (where she served as Worthy Matron), and the Sewing Guild.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Jan Conrad; her son Karl Johansen of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter Wendy (Mark) Rollins of Papillion, NE; daughter-in-law Mary Johansen of Omaha, NE; her grandchildren Audrey Pittman of Papillion, NE; Ashlyn (Marcus) Mejia of Omaha, NE; and Gracie (Jesse) Keller of Catawissa, PA; great-grandson Uriah Mejia, with a great-granddaughter on the way. She is also survived by her brothers Mike Tompkins and Brad (Kathy) Tompkins of Melbourne, FL; sister Valarie (Paul) Donaldson of Dakota Dunes, SD; sister-in-law Loreta Tompkins of Wayne, NE; beloved aunts Audrey Olson of Emerson, NE, and Donna Magnolo of Phoenix, AZ; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her cherished Miniature Schnauzer, Newton.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Rod and Matthew Tompkins; children Eric, Kristen, and Adrienne Johansen; sister-in-law Sandy Tompkins; and brother-in-law Roger Johansen.
Linda's legacy is one of love, faith, strength, and song. She touched countless lives with her kindness, her music, and her unwavering devotion to her family and community. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
