Obituary

Leroy Thomas Zeising, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, IA, at the age of 88. Born on September 16, 1937, in Alton, IA, Leroy was the son of Paul A. and Leona C. (Schluetter) Zeising.

A graduate of Central High School in Sioux City in 1955, Leroy furthered his education at Morningside College in Sioux City. Shortly after, he served in the United States Marines from 1956 to 1958, where he worked as an air traffic controller. He continued his service in the Marine Reserves until 1962.

On September 1, 1962, Leroy was united in marriage to June Herdliska at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. This union was blessed with two children, Troy and Stephanie.

Leroy’s professional life was varied. He began as an ironworker and later, he worked for Armour Oil Company, establishing automotive departments across the United States. He also managed the automotive department at Bellas Hess in Sioux City. Following the closure of Bellas Hess, Leroy continued to operate the existing gas station and he also provided Ryder truck rental service, maintaining a strong presence in the local business community.

Leroy was a steadfast husband to his wife June and a devoted father to his children. Leroy maintained a large vegetable garden and several fruit trees, growing some huge raspberries. His love for the outdoors extended to his enjoyment of boating, fishing, and teaching his children to water ski. He built a large playhouse and treehouse for the children and even refinished a piano to support their music lessons. Leroy was always ready for the changing seasons including snow removal with his vehicle equipped with a blade—often being the first out to plow. His love of sports included baseball, a passion he carried from youth but which was sadly curtailed by a hunting accident that prevented him from attending the Kansas City Athletics training camp.

Leroy was a proud member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was involved in political activities, participating in the Republican Party events. He enjoyed being in a bowling league and treasured weekly card games with friends, valuing these moments of fellowship greatly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ken and Robert.

He is survived by his wife June; son Troy Zeising and his wife Becky; and daughter Stephanie Zeising. He took immense pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Ashley Hildreth and her husband Dusty and their children Rhett and Isla Mae; Garrett Zeising and his wife Alex and their children Lauren and Oliver; Dave Kucera and his wife Ashley Burnett and their son Quinton; Tim Kucera; Molly Markey and her husband Alan and their children Rogan and Wayne; Kayla Meersman and her husband Michael and their children Harrison and Marigold; Alexander Balke and his wife Carlyn Haas; and Breanna Balke. Leroy is also survived by one sister Carole Hennings and her husband Don.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Burial with military honors will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
