LeRoy, son of Delpha and Sanford Learing, was born on February 27, 1939 on a farm near Utica, South Dakota. With seven siblings, he attended a county school until 8th grade, then attended Yankton High School until age 17, when he enlisted in the United States Army. LeRoy spent four years serving his country, and spent three Christmas’ in Germany with Uncle Sam. Upon returning home to South Dakota, LeRoy worked construction on the “Big Ben Dam” on the Missouri River at Ft. Thompson, South Dakota.
In 1962, LeRoy relocated to Council Bluffs, Iowa and on January 5th of 1963 married Mary “Ann” Newquist at the Methodist Church in Belgrade, Nebraska. Their first daughter Terese was born on September 28, 1964. In the fall of 1965, they relocated to Sioux City, Iowa and on December 31, 1967, their daughter Melissa was born.
LeRoy was a heavy equipment mechanic for Case All-Wheel Drive and Case-Piorier Implement for 42 years. He enjoyed and made several items of furniture and hobby items for family and friends and produced a lot of saw-dust! LeRoy was a good father, always made sure his two girls were involved with his projects as a fun learning experience.
LeRoy was a quiet man, never talked too much, but usually came up with a quick, humorous reply. He always drove so…. slow, his girls always said “he had a speed up to get around a 25 MPH curve”.
LeRoy is survived by his wife Mary "Ann", daughter Terese and her husband Dwight Peters; son-in-law Mike Julius; and sister Mary Terese “Sue” Harts and her husband Kenny.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa Julius, his parents, his sisters Lois McIntyre, Janice Gill, and Janet Gill, brothers Gary Learing, Thomas Learing, and Joseph Learing.
