Laura L. Gerkin, 87, of Dakota Dunes, SD died October 20, 2024. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Roger Madden and Neil Peck officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Burial in Minnesota will be held at a later date.
Laura was born August 7, 1937 in Kinglsey, IA, the daughter of Herman Wm. Treptow and Gladys Caroline (Lopau) Treptow. She graduated from Kingsley High School in 1955 and the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.
While still a nursing student, she married Thomas Scott Gerkin on July 10th, 1957 in Kingsley, IA. They were blessed to spend 52 years together before his death in 2010. The couple lived in Sioux City where they raised their 2 sons, prior to moving to Dakota Dunes, SD.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she served in various capacities. She was a “community volunteer” having served on various “health related” boards. She was a past President and 60 year member of Chapter EY, P.E.O. In their retirement years, they wintered in Naples, FL where she volunteered as a tutor and organized the blood drive each year.
She was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed tennis and fishing; and was an avid fan at all Morningside football and basketball games. Her greatest joy, however, was her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed the special times she spent with them at their lake home in MN.
She is survived by her sons, Scott Thomas Gerkin (Shelly) of Jefferson, SD and Craig Alan Gerkin (Kim) of Burnsville, MN; a brother Richard L. Treptow (Linda Sue); grandchildren Shane Gerkin, Steffanie Sada (John), Adam Gerkin (Beata), Chad Gerkin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Thane Treptow, sister-in-law Caroline Treptow, nephew Brian Treptow, sister-in-law Marjorie Gerkin, and a brother-in-law Jim Gerkin.
Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
