Kathie L. Kobernus, 74, of Sioux City, passed away on her birthday, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at a Dunlap care center.
A Celebration of Kathie's Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with Pastor Bill Claeys officiating. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service. Private burial will take place at Logan Park Cemetery.
Kathie was born on November 3, 1952, in Sioux City, the daughter of Art and Helen (Wilson) Kobernus. Upon her high school education, she dove into 22 years of hard work at IBP. Proving it is never too late to try something new, she went on to earn her CDL through Western Iowa Tech Community College and spent her pre-retirement years hauling big-rig parts for Siouxland Trailer Sales, Freightliner, Peterbilt and Kenworth. She was also a proud 1996 graduate, jailer for a short time, and active volunteer with the Sioux City Police Citizen's Academy—meaning she kept a sharp eye on the neighborhood and made sure everyone knew it.
Her love for animals was legendary, borderlining on a full-time calling. If it had fur or feathers, Kathie was on its side. She treated every pet like royalty—though nothing quite topped the era long ago when she somehow ended up owning a pet squirrel, proving no creature was too wild for her heart (or her living room).
When she wasn't caring for her menagerie, Kathie could be found passionately shouting for the Sioux City Musketeers hockey team. Her faith kept her anchored; she was a devoted member of RiverzEdge Church and frequently visited Queen of Peace when she needed a little quiet time away from the chaos.
Those left to cherish her memory include her longtime friend and companion, Dick Newton of Whitewater, Colorado; her sister, Linda Dye of Sioux City; her nieces and nephew, Stacey, Tracey, Mindy, Travis, and Kortney; along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and close friends Matt and his wife Sheri Doyel and Alex Watters.
Kathie was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Helen Kobernus, her sister, Roxene and her husband Richard Cabana and her brother-in-law Pete Dye.
