Karen was born on August 18, 1953 in Estherville, IA to Kelton and Mary (Thompson) Houts.  After high school she traveled and had 3 children, Amy, Stacy and Martin Allen.  She then settled down in Sioux City and began working at John’s Café for 17 years.  She later worked as a grill cook at Mercy Hospital for many years before retiring.  She was a member of Eastern Star and Daughters of The Nile.  Karen was united in marriage to Robin Nissen on September 13, 2008.  Together, her and her hunny bunny would go overnight trips to casinos in the area.  Karen enjoyed gambling, shopping at Kohls, sitting on her deck, going to Okoboji, and cooking for her family.  Even though she never wrote down a recipe, she still made the best pork chops, cutlets, country fried steak, spaghetti and tater tot casserole.  She loved spending time with her family and friends, and will be missed by many.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Robin Nissen; daughters: Amy (Bill) Welty and Stacy Waldon; son, Martin (Julie) Houts; father, Kelton Houts; siblings:  Susie Berry, Mary Kay Baklund, Patty Houts, Kellie Ann DiGiovanni, George Houts; 5 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; best friends: Big Chick and Sandy, and too many more to list.

She is preceded in death by her mom; and brothers: Jeffrey and Allen Houts.
