Olathe, KS formerly of Sioux City

Karen M. (Johnson) Peterson, aged 75, born October 22, 1949, in Sioux City passed in her residence in Olathe, KS. Raised in Sioux City by Genevieve Johnson and Edward Ness, Karen graduated from Sioux City East High School ('67) where she was a cheerleader, athletic runner, and swimmer. She worked for many years at Security National Bank and was a dedicated member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church, even serving as the Ladies' Club President overseeing, preparing, and serving the Syrian dinners. Karen loved creative writing, was a ravenous reader, was a regular at local golf courses with family and friends, and loved soaking up the sun.

Karen is survived by her sister, Patricia Kitchens, her children (with the late Gary Peterson), Kirsten (Chris), Hillary (Chris), and Andrew, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to the Sioux City Warming Shelter, Sioux City Gospel Mission, Siouxland Safe Place, or St. Thomas Orthodox Church.

The family respectfully requests privacy at this time but a public funeral service will take place at St. Thomas Orthodox Church on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 10am. Private burial will take place at St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery in Graceland Park Cemetery. A Trisagion service will take place at St. Thomas Orthodox Church on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 6pm. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is providing professional services.
