Karen’s professional journey as a social worker was marked by her passion for helping women who were victims of domestic violence. She took great pride in her role assisting Congressman Bedell, where her spirit of advocacy shone brightly. Education was also a significant part of Karen’s life; she pursued her academic goals diligently, returning to school in her mid-40s. She attended Briar Cliff University and the University of Nebraska Omaha, ultimately earning her master’s degree at the age of 50.

Karen was known for her larger-than-life personality and adventurous spirit, which endeared her to many. She had a fondness for shopping, especially during her beloved "girls shopping days," along with quilting, traveling, and creating lasting memories with her family. The pride she took in her life accomplishments was evident in her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were her greatest treasures.

She is survived by her daughters, Maureen Myers and Valerie Siegrist (Brent), and her son Vance Goodwin. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Brittny Blanche (Chad), Jeremy Meyers, Robert Siegrist, Harriet Siegrist, and Thomas Goodwin. She delighted in the joy of her great-grandchildren: Jadyn Crippen, Kyson Crippen, Jayse Roemmich, Olivia Myers, and Sullivan Larkin; and her brother Lee (Juanita) Vollmer also survives her.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hix, and her parents, Thomas and Harriet Vollmer. She also mourned the loss of her brother, Norman Vollmer, and her siblings Delores Heiden and Andrew Goodwin, as well as her son Matthew Goodwin and son Daniel Goodwin.

Karen E. Hix will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, compassionate heart, and the indelible mark she left on the lives of those she loved and helped. She lives on in the fond memories and hearts of her family and friends.
