Joyce May Thompson

Joyce May Thompson, 87, of North Sioux City, SD passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at her residence.

A Celebration of Life for Joyce will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 12:00 - 4:00 pm at the Senior Center in North Sioux City, SD.

Joyce, the daughter of Elmer Leroy and Elsie Virginia (Wynn) Homer, was born May 3, 1936, near Jefferson, SD. She was born at home in the family’s log cabin that was by the Missouri River. She attended Civil Bend School.

Joyce married Homer “Sonny” Nyreen at the Baptist Church in North Sioux City and this union was blessed with one daughter, Vicki Virginia. Joyce worked at Zenith in Sioux City. Sonny passed away on October 31, 1968.

On June 3, 1970, Joyce was united in marriage to Ronald D. “Ronnie” Thompson in Elk Point, SD. In the early 1970’s they moved to Sun City, AZ and Joyce worked in Quality Control at Honeywell. Following Ronnie’s passing on August 3, 1997, Joyce moved back to North Sioux City to be closer to her family.

Joyce enjoyed playing cards, reading, and embroidery. She truly enjoyed playing Bingo and going to the Senior Center in North Sioux City.

She is survived by three grandchildren: Benjamin Chamberlin, Joshua Chamberlin, and Samantha McCallister; six great grandchildren: Chloe, Ashley, Victoria (Tori), Colby, Tyler, and Serenity; one sister, Carol Stevens; one sister-in-law, Billie Homer; ten nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; late husbands: Homer Nyreen and Ronald Thompson; one daughter, Vicki McCallister; and one brother, Bruce Elmer Homer.
