John was born on July 30, 1950, in Sioux City to Albert and Doris (Gales) Mullen.  He attended Heelan High School. On October 6, 1973, he was united in marriage to Pamela Theeler in Elk Point, SD (next to a Coke machine). These two best friends built a life together and moved to Dakota City in 1975. Anyone who spent time with John and Pam in their home, became part of the family.

Before retirement, John was employed with Old Home Bakery for many years and later went on to become a Business Agent for the Bakers Union. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards with family and friends, going to the casino, watching Nebraska football and most of all, spending time with his grandkids - who will always be Papa’s babies.

He is survived by his daughters Rebecca (Jason) Kilzer of Sioux City, Karrie (Juan) Alvarez of Sioux City; grandchildren Krystina, Max, Sam and Amelia; sister Kathy Heutinck of Kansas City and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pamela,  sisters Jana Allen, Barbara Barber and her husband Bob Barber, brothers Micheal Mullen and Thomas Mullen, brother in-law Ed Heutinck, sister in-law Patricia Theeler and brother in-law Steve Theeler and his wife Kay Theeler.

Heartfelt thanks go out to all that were a part of John’s life over the years. He was always surrounded by cherished family and friends, including the neighborhood family in Dakota City.
