Gary Krohn

March 12, 1942 — February 8, 2024

Sioux City, IA

John Gary Krohn passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on February 8, 2024, at the age of 81.

Born on March 12, 1942, in Pekin, Illinois, to John and Alberta Mae (Wilson) Krohn, Gary was the eldest of four children and grew up in South Pekin. After graduation from Pekin Community High School, where he was active in sports, he attended Illinois State University on a track-and-field scholarship. In July 1967, he married the love of his life, Cathy Lynn Bastonero. The couple resided briefly in Pekin, then lived for a time in Carbondale while Gary attended Southern Illinois University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. The young family then spent a few years in Hampton, Illinois, before finally settling in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1976, where their two children, Michael and Erin, were raised.

After his time in college, Gary followed in his father’s footsteps and became an ironworker. He had a hand in constructing many bridges and buildings in the Missouri River basin, particularly in and around Kansas City and Omaha, where he was a proud member of Ironworkers Local 21. He was big fan of the Chiefs and Cubs and, as an avid golfer, spent many hours out on the links with his friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy (Bastonero) Krohn, and his brother Dennis Krohn. He is survived by his children, Michael Krohn and Erin Krohn, and their spouses; by his siblings Eric Krohn and Deborah Krohn; and by his sisters-in-law, Julie Krohn, Gloria Bianchi, and Anita Krause, as well as by six nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel at 3220 Stone Park Blvd. in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Interment of Gary’s ashes will be at a later date at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, Illinois, in a graveside service with family present.

The family is indebted to Mike Rodriguez and Denny Fey for their years of help and devoted friendship to Gary.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Siouxland Humane Society.
