Joan M. Whitney, a lifelong resident of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on May 22, 2026, at the age of 79. She was born on November 6, 1946, to Rudolph and Sally (Hedlund) Carlson.

Joan graduated from Riverside High School in 1964 and spent her career working for the Woodbury County Clerk of Courts Office before retiring. She was known for her hard work, great sense of humor, and ability to make people laugh. Family, friends, and coworkers will remember her quick wit and the laughter she brought to those around her.

Joan loved music and was especially talented at playing the organ. Christmas Eve gatherings were a favorite family tradition, and she often entertained everyone by playing her favorite tunes. She also loved her dogs, and keeping her lawn looking beautiful.

Family was a big part of Joan's life. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and loved talking about their accomplishments. She is survived by her daughter, Kris Hill and husband Jim; her son, Ryan Whitney and wife Kristy; granddaughter Kaitlyn Hill; grandson Collin Hill; and granddaughter Ryanna Whitney.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudy and Sally Carlson; her infant son, Matthew Whitney; and her brother, Doug Carlson.

Per her wishes, Joan has been cremated, and a private interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Funeral Homes is assisting with arrangements.
