Joan D. Brockhaus, 87, of Sioux City, IA passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at her residence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Holy Cross Parish – St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial will be at Banner Township Cemetery - Lawton, IA. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.

Joan, the daughter of John E. and Mildred G. (Widtfeldt) Binkerd was born September 30, 1935, in Lynch, NE. Joan attended grade school in Lynch, NE and later at Ewing, NE. She graduated from O’Neill High School with the Class of 1953. Following high school, she furthered her education by attending Norfolk Junior College from 1953-1954 and Briar Cliff College in Sioux City from 1954-1955.

On October 19, 1955, Joan was united in marriage to William J. Brockhaus at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk, NE and this union was blessed with four sons. Early in their marriage, Joan and Bill lived in Tacoma, WA and Fairbanks, AK while he served in the military. In November of 1957, they moved to Sioux City and Joan started working as a medical insurance clerk. She worked for Cusack Harmon Medical Supply (1958-1964), Dr. George G. Spellman (1964-1991), Dr. James Walston (1991-1994), and St. Luke’s Health Resources (1995-2002). In January of 1977, Joan and Bill divorced and he passed away on November 25, 2017.

Joan is survived by her four sons: Michel (Denise) Brockhaus of Norfolk, NE, Stephen (Connie) Brockhaus of Moville, IA, Deacon Dennis (Liz) Brockhaus of Sioux City, and Deacon Patrick (Patty) Brockhaus of Sioux City; extended family – sons: Matt (Thersa) Brockhaus of Jackson, NE and Chad (Becky) Brockhaus of Moville; nine grandchildren; four extended family grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; one brother, Stanley (Sharon) Spangler of O’Neill, NE; two sisters: Delores (Bob) Ruzicka of Verdigre, NE and Mary (Robert) Abart of Memphis, TN; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, John E. Binkerd; her mother, Mildred (Binkerd) Spangler, her stepfather, Melvin Spangler; one brother, John D. (Rose) Binkerd; and all great grands that went before her in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family, and they will designate to different charities.
