Jerry Thomas Bisenius, the son of James W. and Lois (Leuer) Bisenius, was born on March 3, 1951, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2024, in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 73.
Jerry's educational journey began in his hometown, where he graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1969. During his high school years, he enjoyed playing football, which ignited a lifelong passion for the sport. He continued his education at Buena Vista in Storm Lake, where he not only furthered his studies but also excelled as a member of the football team. Over four years, Jerry made his mark on the field, earning an honorable mention as an All-American in 1972, culminating in his graduation with a teaching degree in 1973.
On June 2, 1973, Jerry was united in marriage to Peggy "Peg" A. (Wiges) in Carroll, Iowa, and this union was blessed with two children.
Throughout his distinguished career, Jerry began teaching at Emmetsburg Catholic before moving on to Crestland High School in Early, Iowa, where he taught and coached. For 35 years, he called Atkinson, Nebraska, his home. There, he served as a teacher for five years before transitioning to careers with New York Life Insurance and Olson Industries. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jerry held the position of Mayor of Atkinson for several years. Since 2016, Jerry and Peg have made their home in North Sioux City, South Dakota.
Jerry was known for his big heart and profound love for his family, particularly his grandchildren. He was a steadfast supporter of all the activities they participated in. His hobbies reflected his zest for life, as he enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, and grilling, often sharing these interests with loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, Peg; one daughter, Joy (Brian) Krysl of Hollister, MO, along with their children Makenna (Cody) of Duenweg, MO, Carter of Lenexa, KS, and Camden; one son, Will (Melisa) Bisenius of North Sioux City, SD, and their son Marcus. Jerry is also survived by three siblings, Linda (Clint) Thompson, Donna (Tim) Vala, and Rick (Candy) Bisenius, as well as a sister-in-law, Jane Bisenius, and several nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jim Bisenius.
Cremation rites will be accorded, and a Celebration of Life for Jerry will be held at a later date.
