Janette Deck (Hahne) was born in Kansas City, Missouri June 16, 1954 to Jacqueline and Kenneth Hahne. During Jan’s childhood, she lived in several places including Missouri, Georgia, and Nebraska. Her favorite move was to Georgia where she experienced many happy moments and recounted often those pleasant memories.
She moved with her family to Omaha and attended junior high and graduated from Burke High School. She went on to college at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln majoring in Speech and Audiology. It was at the University in the Spring of 1974, where she met her future husband, Bill. They were married June 24, 1977 in the First United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa.
Jan graduated and went on to receive her Master’s degree from UNL in Speech/Language Pathology in 1978. Jan and her husband moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1979 where she worked for the Area Education Agency 12 (later Western Hills AEA) in the Siouxland public and private schools. As a Speech/Language Pathologist she gave valuable therapy to autistic children and others needing speech development. She loved all children, and they loved her. She received great joy in working with her students and witnessing their growth.
She retired 39 years later and began her avocations of biking, swimming, and involving herself with trading and finances. She loved nature; and, simply, she enjoyed life.
However, her greatest joy was talking and spending time with her six grandchildren, ages two to eleven. She loved them dearly and became an integral part of their lives. They will miss her presence sorely.
Jan was a wonderful and loving wife and mother to her two children, Jessica Lutz and William Austin Deck. She was always devoted to her family and so deeply loving. She was a blessing to all wh0 knew her. Her final message she wanted to leave was, “It’s a wonderful world; show kindness to others.”
Jan passed away May 20, 2025. According to her wishes there will be no service. Her focus was on life and did not want others to mourn over her death. The world will definitely miss one of its precious treasures.
Jan is survived by her husband, Bill, her children, Jessica and Austin, her six grandchildren, Jan’s twin sister, Lynette Hahne, her older brother, William Hahne, and younger sister, Alicia Oestmann. She was preceded in death by her parents.
