James “Jim” J.C. Abdo, Jr., 89 of Sioux City, passed away on his birthday, July 26, 2025 while at home, comforted by family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City, with Monsignor Kenneth Seifried as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation, with family present, will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 29th at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with a Rosary beginning at 6:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service immediately following on Tuesday evening. Online Condolences may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com Memorial contributions may be offered to St. Croix Hospice of Sioux City, Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue of Sioux City, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Jim was born on July 26, 1936 in Sioux City, Iowa to James C. and Margaret (George) Abdo. He received his education in the Sioux City Public Schools, graduating from Central High School in 1955. Jim has been a long-time resident of Siouxland, and worked for Kaplan’s for 23 years, Robert’s Dairy for 5 years, Krigsten’s Furniture for 15 years, Custom Woodworks for 10 years, and MCI and North Star respectively for both 3 years each.

Jim married the love-of-his-life Patricia “Pat” Hegarty on August 12, 1976 in Dakota City, Nebraska. Jim was an active member of the Catholic Faith, enjoyed being a member of the choir at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he also enjoyed being an usher. He was a member of the Knight’s of Columbus in Siouxland.

Jim played slow-pitch softball for the church league, coached boys and girls basketball for Immaculate Conception grade school for 15 years. He also coached girls grade school softball for 2 years. Jim loved to golf, fish, watch football, and basketball (especially loved watching Iowa Hawkeyes men and women basketball, and Iowa Football). He loved to laugh and tease people, but found his greatest joy with his family and friends. Jim will be extremely missed by all that loved him.

Jim is survived by his wife Patricia “Pat” Abdo of Sioux City, Iowa; four children Theresa (Gregg) Garthright of Mesa, Arizona, Mike (Peg) Abdo of Maiden, North Carolina, Carol (Dan) Abdo-Brownsberger of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Pam Abdo and his grand-dog Belle, of Sioux City, Iowa; three grandchildren Matthew (Mitzi) Garthright, Melissa (Michelle) Carter, and Kari (Suzie) Garthright; two bonus sons, David Hobbs and Brett Hegarty; his extended brothers and sisters Geri Kayl, Ronnie (Carol) Hegarty, Dan (Cris) Hegarty, Randy (Pat) Hegarty, Terry (Paula) Hegarty, Tom (Carol Sue) Hegarty, and Rick (Helen) Coury; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and an aunt.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents James C. and Margaret Abdo, Sr. and his brother Jerry Abdo.

Honorary Bearers for his service will be Ron Hegarty, Dan Hegarty, Randy Hegarty, Terry Hegarty, Tom Hegarty, and Rick Coury.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to St. Croix Hospice of Sioux City for all the wonderful care they provided our husband, father, and grandfather. Especially Sherri, R.N. and John, C.N.A.
