Jack Smith, 97, of Sioux City passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at a local hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Reverend Kenny Hsu, officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 5-7 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Jack was born on July 31, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Joseph and Martha (Thompson) Smith. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Central High School, receiving his diploma in 1947. He served in the United States Army as an infantryman in World War II during his high school years. After serving his country, he returned to Sioux City where he remained throughout his life.
On May 12, 1957, he married Arleen Straub in Paullina, Iowa. They were happily married for 42 years and welcomed two children, Bruce and Pamela, before Arleen preceded him in death in 2000.
Jack worked for over 50 years at Sieg-Sioux City Co. where he served in several different capacities within the company.
Outside of work, Jack was deeply committed to serving in the Sioux City community. He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City, where he served as a head usher for many years and assisted with many projects. Additionally, he was a volunteer for Hospice of Siouxland for 25 years, volunteered at the St. Luke’s gift shop, and volunteered at the Gospel Mission in the Soup Kitchen.
In his free time, Jack enjoyed woodworking, gardening, bird watching, and bread making.
He is survived by his daughter, Pam Whightsil of Sioux City; granddaughter, Sharon Whightsil of Austin, TX; daughter-in-law, Jan Smith; grandsons: Daniel Smith and wife Meg Schmitt and Michael Smith and wife Christianne; niece, Nancy Johnson; and nephews: Jay, Carl, and David Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Smith; mother, Martha Smith; sister, Doris Johnson; wife, Arleen Smith; son, Bruce Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
