Howard Eugene Nelson, 90, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Abiding by his wishes, cremation will take place and no services are planned. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
Howard was born on May 30, 1936, in Tyler, Minnesota, to Ervin H. and Florence M. (Klucking) Nelson. An only child, he grew up in Vesta, Minnesota, and graduated from high school in Redwood Falls, Minnesota.
Following high school, Howard proudly served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1957, receiving an honorable discharge. On July 7, 1957, he married Marilyn, and together they were blessed with three children.
Howard dedicated his professional life to education. He earned his teaching degree from Mankato State University and later completed his master’s degree at the University of South Dakota. He became a respected educator with the Sioux City Public School District, where he primarily taught biology. Howard cared deeply about his work and the students he taught. He chose to retire early from teaching so he could devote his time to caring for Marilyn, who passed away on November 13, 1995.
In time, Howard found companionship and love again with Karen (Townsend) Davis. The two were married on November 26, 2005, and shared many years together.
Outside of teaching and family life, Howard enjoyed a variety of hobbies that reflected his appreciation for nature and the simple pleasures of life. He raised chickens and other animals, tended to his large garden, and enjoyed helping local farmers with their chores. He also found enjoyment in bird watching, taking time to appreciate the natural world around him. Howard was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; his three children, Jill (Susan Van Houten) Nelson, Amy Nelson, and Jay (Katie) Nelson; and his two grandchildren, Alex and Rhodes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marilyn; and his stepson, Robert Davis.
