Helen Lorraine Petersen, 94, of Sioux City, IA passed away Friday, July 7, 2023 at MercyOne Hospital. She was 18 days shy of her 95^th birthday. A Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2023 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. A visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday July 12, 2023 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. Helen was born on July 25, 1928 in Kellerton, IA to Baptiste Americus “Mac” and Velta Mae (Hamblin) Rubida. She was the third of four children.  Helen married Dale Otto Petersen of Anthon, IA on June 22, 1948 in Ellendale, IA. Together they had one daughter, Donna Rae (Petersen) Tremmel. Helen had three grandchildren: Matthew Tremmel of Sioux City, Katherine (Van Maanen) of Sanborn, and Lucas Tremmel of Sioux City.

Helen was a graduate of the historical Castle on the Hill, then known as Central high School. She was also a survivor of the 1953 Floyd River Flood, an event she remembered until her final moments. Helen and Dale were known to a cut a rug on the dance floor during their courtship and marriage. Helen was also a league bowler, though she did not often talk about it in her later years. She was known to be an excellent crafter and craftsman who could do anything from delicate embroidery to building her own garage. She was also known to have a bit of lead foot while driving the neighborhood mothers around town to find the best bargains on food and clothing.

Helen entered Sunrise Retirement Community in January 2019. There she enjoyed playing bingo and winning prizes for her great-grandchildren.

Helen attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church since 1954. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Donna and son-in-law Tony Tremmel of Sioux City, grandsons, Matthew and Lucas, granddaughter, Katherine and grandson-in-law Darrick Van Maanen of Sanborn, and four great-grandchildren: Annabelle, Damian, Josephine, and Vincent, and several nieces and nephews.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband Dale, parents, Mac and Mae Rubida, her brothers and sister Leroy, Luella and Phillip, sisters-in-law, Dolores, Pauline and Pat.
