Helen Joyce Mahaney

Helen Joyce Mahaney, 81 of Hinton, formerly of Sioux City, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Bickford Memory Care.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City with Father David Hemann as Celebrant.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.  Visitation, with family present, will be one hour prior to services at the church.  Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com Memorial donations may be offered to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 2223 Indian Hills Drive, Sioux City, Iowa 51104

Helen was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1941 in Pierson, Iowa to Leo and Marjorie (Pease) Farber.  She graduated from the St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing and was an industrial nurse for Iowa Beef Packers, Inc after graduating. 

She married Joseph W. Mahaney on September 7, 1968 in Pierson, Iowa.  The couple remained close to Siouxland throughout their marriage, living in Leeds, Hinton, and Sioux City.  Helen continued her nursing career her entire life, until her retirement. 

Helen enjoyed her membership to the St. Michael’s Catholic Church off Indian Hills in Sioux City, along with her love of quilting, sewing, reading, baking, and working in her yard. 

Helen is survived by her step-sons Joseph W. (Patty) Mahaney II of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and James M. (Jeannie) Mahaney of Hinton, Iowa; grandchildren James F. (Lisa) Mahaney, Justin (Cassi) Mahaney, Jozey, Jayde, and Jeremy Mahaney; great-grandchildren Mariah, Kaylie, Liam, and Jameson Mahaney; sister Dorothy (Louis) Blackburn of Norway, Iowa; sister-in-law Mona Farber of Naples, Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Helen was preceded in by her parents, husband Joseph in May of 1990, brother Donnie Farber, step-son Jerome Mahaney, and in-laws Joseph & Alma Mahaney. 

Pallbearers for the service will be grandchildren James F. Mahaney, Justin Mahaney, Jozey Mahaney, Jayde Mahaney, and Jeremy Mahaney.
