Harold H. Chartier

   Harold H. Chartier, 101, of Sioux City passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021 at his home.

   A memorial mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City with Father Terry Roder, Celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 1, 2021 at the church. There will be a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. with Deacon Bruce Chartier officiating. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

   Harold, the son of Walter and Beulah (Begnoche) Chartier, was born May 31, 1920 in Clyde, Kansas. During Harold’s early years his family made their home in several different communities. From 1941 to 1945, during WWII, he served as a Navy gunner in the Pacific and Atlantic.

   In 1943, Harold was united in marriage to Evelyn Girard, and this union was blessed with four children. The family made their home in Sioux City and Harold worked in construction and maintenance for several years.

   After Evelyn’s passing, Harold was united in marriage to Lois Riehle in 1968 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City.

   Harold was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He also enjoyed making canes and lamps from diamond willow. He loved being outdoors doing yard work and gardening. Above all, he cherished spending time with family and friends and he never knew a stranger.

   He is survived by his children: Kay Dunn of Sioux City, Gary Chartier of Canton, SD, Bruce (Terri) Chartier of Sioux City, and Joan (John) Eveland of North Sioux City, SD; stepchildren: Lowell (Pat) Coffee of Richland, SD and Bonnie Cannon of Gastonia, NC; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Lois Chartier and Betty Schmidt; one brother-in-law, Leonard (Rita) Girard; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; two spouses: Evelyn in 1968 and Lois in 2012: three brothers: Elmer, Alfred, and Everette; two sisters: Stella and Wilma; and special friends, Jack and Annette Lethcoe.

   In honor of Harold, anyone attending his service that has a cane made by him please bring it to the church so an arch can be formed as we proceed out after the mass.
