Georgia A. Diavastes

Sioux City

Georgia A. Diavastes, 97, of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 12, 2024 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 900 6th Street, Sioux City. Visitation will be Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Graceland Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Diavastes was born Christmas Day, 1926 in Sioux City.   She was the daughter of Apostoulos Primates and Anna (Newman) Primates. She married the love of her life, John Diavastes, on September 1, 1946 and they were together until John’s passing in 1997. Georgia lost her daughter Elaine Diavastes, 62, in 2011 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Georgia worked at Zenith in Sioux City, and then returned to school to study nursing. She was a nurse until her retirement. Georgia always worked to help those less fortunate than herself. In 2016 she was the Iowa recipient of the Red Cross’s “Heroes of the Heartland Award” for her charitable work creating thousands of hand crocheted items for woman and children in need both locally and at Shriner’s Hospitals in Dallas. 

Mrs. Diavastes was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church, where she volunteered as both the Administrator of the Sunday School and as a teacher for many years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Siouxland.

Survivors include her son and his wife, James and Lynn Diavastes, and a granddaughter, Alise, from Buffalo, NY.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and daughter, Elaine.
