George C. Benson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, was called to meet his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 21, 2025, in Sioux City, IA, at the age of 82. George passed away at home in the loving care of his wife, Sharon, after a long illness.

Born on June 30, 1943, in Sioux City, IA, George was the son of Verlin and Frances (Yates) Benson. He grew up in Sioux City and attended East High School, after which he pursued further education at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He was united in marriage with Sharon F. (Dirks) Benson on June 9, 1963, at Morningside Lutheran Church, where they built a life together and raised two children, making their home in Sioux City.

Throughout his life, George demonstrated a remarkable passion for architecture and building. He held various positions that allowed him to hone his skills, including working as an electrical draftsman where he designed the electrical layout for several buildings in Sioux City. His professional journey encompassed roles as manager for Postal Finance Company, branch manager for Toy National Bank, inventory specialist at Soo Tractor Sweep Rake Company, as well as farming. George owned several businesses including Dollar Etc., the Train Depot, ERA Blue Diamond Realty, and finally, Advantage Builders, where he could truly express his craft.

George was known for his great sense of humor and his insatiable curiosity, always eager to learn something new. His love for his grandchildren was profound and he was a loving husband with a big heart who was always willing to help others in need. His interests extended beyond his career; he was a dedicated member of Morningside Lutheran Church, serving as an usher for many years. Additionally, he belonged to the Sioux City Board of Realtors and the National Suffolk Sheep Association, reflecting his diverse interests. George was a train enthusiast. He also enjoyed building houses which showcased his lifelong dedication to craftsmanship.

George is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sharon; his daughter, Shaun (Brian) Herndon of Tucson, AZ; and four grandchildren: MaKara (Ethan) Goetz of Oskaloosa, IA, Colten (Jasmine) Benson of Ottumwa, IA, Sierra Herndon of Minneapolis, MN, and Avalon Herndon of Okinawa, Japan. He also leaves behind six great-grandchildren, his brother, Edward (Edie) Benson of Surprise, AZ, and sister, Carolyn (Lloyd) Muhs of Moville, IA. Several nieces and nephews also survive him, cherishing the memories they shared with George.

George was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Edna Yates; his parents, Verlin and Frances Benson; his son, Paul Benson; and his sister, Eldina Benson.

A memorial service honoring George’s life will be held at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, IA, on Saturday, December 27, 2025, starting at 10:30 AM, with a reception to follow.
