George Richard Barkley, 90, of Merrill, IA passed away on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Kingsley Specialty Care in Kingsley, IA. Born on July 22, 1935, in Sioux City, IA, he was raised in rural Sioux City, the son of Frank James and Rose Elizabeth (Gruber) Barkley. George was a proud graduate of Heelan High School, class of 1953, where he formed lasting friendships that he enjoyed throughout his life.

After high school, George demonstrated his patriotism by serving honorably in the United States Army. On April 27, 1957, he married Georgia "Rosemary" (Mahaney) Barkley in California and they were blessed with three children. The family resided in California for a few years before returning to the Siouxland area in 1960.

George forged a successful career in the construction and asphalt business, spending several years with Brower Construction before partnering with his brother and nephew at Barkley Asphalt.

Outside of his professional life, George was known for his engaging personality and vibrant interests. He was a die-hard supporter of Donald Trump. He loved attending auctions in search of unique deals, was an avid collector, and enjoyed playing cards. Above all, George cherished the time spent with his family, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by four siblings: Mildred Albert, Madonna Hoefling, Rosemarie Messerlie, and William (Mary Kay) Barkley, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosemary, on August 25, 2019; his parents; four siblings: John (Sally) Barkley, Jim (Carol) Barkley, Tom Barkley, and Mary Barkley; as well as two brothers-in-law: Chris Albert and Vincent Hoefling.
