Gary Hacker, 85, passed away at his home in Sioux City Thursday, Sept. 17, after a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Faith United Presbyterian Church with Reverend David Koehler officiating. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 A.M. at the church. Private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born April 23, 1941, and grew up in Sioux City, IA, except for living in Sgt. Bluff & Jefferson, SD for a few years. He was in the class of 1958 at Sioux City East High School. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard from June 1957 to June 1964. He received an Honorable Discharge from the army on May 31, 1965, after attaining the rank of Sgt E-5.

Gary was hired at D.K. Baxter Co. in 1960, first working in the Parts Department and later moving up to The Manager of the Major Appliance Department. After D.K. Baxter Co. closed in April 1969, Gary worked for the Livestock Division of Hartford Insurance. Later he started the Hacker Truck Permit Service as a home-based business. He retired on June 1, 2001, from Hartford. He operated the Hacker Truck Permit Service for 32 years before selling the business.

On April 20, 1963, Gary and Alice (Olsen) were married at First Covenant Church in Sioux City and bought a small house in Morningside. Gene was born in1965, necessitating a move to a larger house. Two more moves took us to our current home. Christopher was born in 1974.

Gary was the Cubmaster for Pack 208 first at Whittier Elementary School and later at Morningside Presbyterian Church. He became a Mason in 1985 and joined the Shrine Temple in 1986. He was a Shrine Clown from 1986 through 2008.

Gary had been raised as a Catholic but attended church with Alice. In 1964, they joined Third Presbyterian Church. Through the years, Gary was a Deacon, Asst. Sunday School Superintendent, and served on the Board of Trustees and the Session. In October 2010, Gary and Alice started the Church’s Empty Nesters dinner club. In 2016, Third Presbyterian Church merged with Morningside Presbyterian, forming the new Faith United Presbyterian Church where Gary has served on the Session & as the Church Treasurer.

Gary was preceded in death by both parents, his brother, a niece, and Daughter-In-Law, Sandra (Gene).

Left to cherish their memories are his wife of 63 years, Alice; their 2 sons; Gene of Sioux City and his children: Autumn (Josh Rhodes); Anna, Caleb, and stepdaughter Hailey; Chis (Tina) of Woodbury, MN and their daughters Ava and Brynn.

Gary is also survived by a sister, Berniece Locker of Whiting, IA and her 2 sons, Everett and Bob. He also leaves behind many caring friends and neighbors.

Gary loved life and always put his family and his faith first. Even to his last days, he put on a brave face and tried to entertain. He will be greatly missed by everyone!
