Gale Ernest Bobolz, 89 of Sioux City, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at his home, comforted by family. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2026 at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Russ Senstad and Pastor David Zirpel officiating. Visitation will begin at the church at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, with family present. A funeral luncheon will follow services with burial at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa to follow lunch. Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Gale was born on December 26, 1936 in rural Sutherland, Iowa to Ernest and Lucy (Ehlers) Bobolz. He was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland on January 17, 1937. He attended grade school in Calumet and Hartley, graduating from Moneta High School with the Class of 1955. Gale volunteered for the military and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1957.
Gale married Carol (Anderson) Swanson on March 13, 1971 in Hartley, Iowa, and was a loving father to daughter Angela Carol and son Bradley Gale. He worked at Frisbee Implement in Primghar, Iowa and J.F. Anderson Lumber Company in both Hartley and Emmetsburg, Iowa before joining the Security State Bank in Hartley, Iowa, where he enjoyed 35 years of service working in various capacities. Gale retired in 1999 from the bank.
Gale was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley for 60 years. He was confirmed there on March 22, 1951. He served as an usher, sang in the choir, served as an elder and held numerous offices in the congregation. Gale also served as the Secretary of the School Board of Hartley-Sanborn and later Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn for 20 years.
Gale was a member of the Hartley Investment Club, charter member of the Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club, served on the board of the Hartley Community Memorial Hospital, and belonged to the Northwest Iowa Bankers Association.
He and Carol moved to Sioux City in 2003 and became members of Redeemer Lutheran Church where Gale served as Chairman of the Endowment and Legacy Committee. He began working at Gordon Drive HyVee delivering flowers, groceries and pharmacy in 2003, and worked there until he broke his hip and was forced to retire.
Gale loved sports of any kind and never missed a game of his children and attended most of the grandchildren’s events.
Gale is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol; daughter Angela Williams and her husband Clarence and their son Quinn, his wife Kassandra, and their sons Julian and Elijah, and their son Tavian; son Bradley Bobolz and his wife Michelle and their children Ella, Carter, and Evie; sister Linda (Larry) Tewes; brother-in-law Raymond Anderson and his wife Nancy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gale was preceded in death by his parents, his wife’s parents Grace and Russell Anderson, brothers Leon and Curtis Bobolz, sisters Darlene Lux and Janet Thomsen, brothers-in-law Dale Lux, Rod Thomsen, and Dr. Roger Anderson, sisters-in-law Mary Ann Bobolz and Lois Bobolz Deiterman, nephew Roger Bobolz, and niece Pat Thomsen.
