Gertrude “Trudi” Leona Malcom January 14, 1936 – July 27, 2026

Gertrude “Trudi” Malcom, 90, of South Sioux City, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026. Funeral service will be Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Mohr & Becker‑Hunt Funeral Home, 1431 W. 29th Street, South Sioux City, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m also at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Born January 14, 1936, in Macy, Nebraska, to Charles (Lester) and Mildred Perrin Buck, Trudi grew into a woman whose warmth, faith, and hospitality left a lasting mark on everyone who knew her.

A 1954 graduate of South Sioux City High School, Trudi married Wilmer Malcom on September 26, 1954. After his service in the U.S. Navy, they returned to Nebraska to raise their family. Together they raised five children: Dawn Durgin, Steve (Ronda) Malcom, Shelly (Dale) Ronfeldt, Cheryl (Chuck) Ellis, and Lori (Tim) Beckman.

Trudi worked for several local businesses over the years, including The Corner Store in South Sioux City; and in Sioux City both Younkers and Fareway. She was a lifelong member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (now Community of Christ), where she served as an Elder. Her deep faith shaped and guided her life and gave her great comfort in the hope of meeting her Lord and Savior.

Family was everything to Trudi. She delighted in welcoming new members into the family—by marriage or by birth—by treating many others as bonus children. She was famous for her banana bread and for the dinner rolls made from her Grandma Perrin’s cherished recipe. An accomplished seamstress and quilter, Trudi lovingly made quilts for her children and grandchildren, each stitch reflecting her care.

Trudi is survived by her children: Dawn Durgin, Steve (Ronda) Malcom, Shelly (Dale) Ronfeldt, Cheryl (Chuck) Ellis, and Lori (Tim) Beckman; grandchildren Nichole Coffman, Jenni Patterson, Audrey (Josh) Ho, Amber (John) Eilers, Zach (Meg) Durgin, Chad Ellis, Christopher (Taylor) Ellis, Kelle (Adam) Zabih, Michaela (Dylan) Carlson, and Samantha Beckman; step-grandchildren Jennifer (Brandon) Crowley, Tony (Mattie) Gensler, and Josh Gensler; fifteen great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren, with one great-great-granddaughter and another great-great granddaughter expected soon.

She also is survived by her sister Delores McCarthy, sister-in-law Marian Buck, brother-in-law Larry (Trish) Malcom, many treasured nieces and nephews, and dear friends including Homer DeWitt, Rodney and Denise Murad, and the Friday night supper group.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wilmer; her parents and grandparents; brothers Verl and Darrell Buck; son-in-law Tom Durgin; step-grandson AJ Gensler; brothers-in-law George McCarthy, Jerry Malcom, and Daryl (Corky) Beckwith; and sister-in-law Marlene Beckwith.

Trudi’s home was a place of comfort, laughter, and good food. She will be remembered for her loving hospitality, her confidence and strength of faith, and the many small, generous ways she cared for others. Her family takes comfort in her steadfast belief and in the many loving memories she leaves behind.
