Obituary

Fredrick George Magee, 87, of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at Accura Healthcare of Le Mars, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life will be at 10:00 A.M. September 5th, 2026, at New Life Church in Pierre, SD.

Fredrick was born June 1, 1939, in Tappen, North Dakota, the son of William and Alice (Cameron) Magee, along with his siblings, Arlene (Rath), Richard “Dick”, Keith, and Kay (Flaugher). The children all attended Buckeye country school.

Fred enlisted in the United States Army when he was 17 years old. He spent most of his time in Germany. Fred married Marion Bauske in 1957, in Moorehead, MN, and to this union, four children were born: Wanda (Mickelson), Candace (Klemann), Fred. Jr. and Laurie Magee.

Fred was a Master Plumber, owning his own business, Magee’s Plumbing and Heating, for over 35 years and was well known and respected by his peers. In 1979, Fred was elected National Plumbing Director of District 4, PHCC. He was appointed to the State Plumbing Commission by the Governor in 1980, and elected president of the South Dakota State Plumbing Commission. He was named “National Plumbing Contractor of the Year” in 1981. In 1982, Fred was mentioned in the Governor’s “State of the State Address” as the plumber bringing back a trophy bigger than himself. Fred has been a member of the South Dakota and National Association of Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors since 1967. He held all offices at the state level. Fred also was a member of the National Standard Plumbing Code Committee which met in Washington, DC. He was very instrumental in getting mandatory licensing for Plumbing.

Fred was an avid golfer in his free time, and enjoyed BBQing, hunting, and spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.

Fred married Erma Diez in 1971, and this blended a family of nine children.

Fred is survived by his wife of 55 years, Erma, children: Wanda (Chuck) Mickelson, Candace Kleman, Laurie Magee; and daughter-in-law Carmen Magee; his stepchildren: Cecilia Williams, Carla (Kelly) Watkins, Robert (Rose) Diez, Steve Diez, and Duane (Kathy) Diez; 20 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Alice Magee, son Fred Jr. and his wife Kristy, sons-in-law Mike Williams and Scott Klemann, sisters: Kay Flaugher and Arlene Rath, and brothers: Richard Magee and Keith Magee.

Memorials may be directed to St. Croix Hospice in Fred’s memory.
