Elliott Buffalo Chief Sr. "Ta Maza Canku", also known as B.C., was born on January 17, 1950, in Winnebago, Nebraska, to Luther and Ella (Knudson) Buffalo Chief. He passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at his residence in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 76.

Elliott attended Central High School in Sioux City and graduated in 1970. He continued his education at Haskell Institute, Western Iowa Tech Community College, and Morningside College. From 1976 to 1979, Elliott proudly served in the United States Marine Corps until his honorable discharge. During his military service, he was awarded two Meritorious Masts, two Rifle Expert Badges, and one Marksman Badge.

Throughout his life, Elliott worked in a variety of positions, with one of his most meaningful roles being his work with the Native American Alcohol Treatment Program. He was known for his mechanical abilities and had a natural talent for working on automobiles.

Elliott found great joy in life's simple pleasures, especially Thanksgiving gatherings, Super Bowl celebrations, family cookouts, and any occasion that brought loved ones together. Above all, he treasured spending time with his family, sharing stories, laughter, and creating lasting memories. A gifted athlete, Elliott had a deep love for sports and was an exceptional basketball player whose talent and competitive spirit were admired by many. He remained a lifelong sports enthusiast and proudly cheered for the Kansas City Chiefs, the New York Yankees, and the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team.

Those who knew Elliott will remember him as outgoing, talkative, and outspoken, with a personality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His passing marks an important moment in Ponca history, as he was a direct descendant of Chief Standing Bear and is remembered as the last full-blooded Ponca.

Elliott is survived by his children: three sons, Jelsen R. Buffalo Chief, Martel Buffalo Chief, and Elliott Buffalo Chief Jr.; two daughters, Rosie Buffalo Chief and Cherrell Buffalo Chief; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Ella Buffalo Chief; his wife, Cheryl L. Cook; and many brothers and sisters.

Traditional Native services for Elliott will begin with a wake at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026, at St. Paul's Indian Mission, 524 Center Street, Sioux City, IA 51103. The wake will continue through the weekend until the traditional service, which will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at St. Paul's Indian Mission.

Following the service, Elliott will be laid to rest at the Ponca Tribal Cemetery near Niobrara, Nebraska.
