Ellen Marlene Madsen, 78, of Sioux City passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024 surrounded by family. Her cancer diagnosis, a mere nine weeks, shocked her and her family, yet she courageously fought it to the very end. Memorial Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024 at Sunnybrook Community Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Many Hands for Haiti. The link is www.mh4h.org
True to Ellen’s nature, she thoughtfully crafted her own obituary prior to her passing. What better way to highlight her life than through the words she chose herself? This is what she wrote:
“I was born April 26, 1946 to Art and Cora Uittenbogaard. I went to grade school, high school and graduated nurse’s training in 1967. I was a nurse for 40 years.
I have three beautiful children: Brian Breyfogle, Teresa Breyfogle, and Deb Flores (husband George). They have gifted me with so many memories and I am so proud of who they have become.
I have three loving grandchildren: Kris Flores, Maddie Flores, and Gracie Breyfogle – they kept me young and loved me unconditionally.
I have one brother, Gary (wife Pat), he always makes me laugh, and one sister, Betty, who is a dear friend and always came when I needed her.
My passion is Haiti. I love the people and the country. They taught me ‘things’ are not important. It’s all about giving, loving, and being humble.
I thank God for always being with me and blessing me beyond measure.”
