Sioux City

Douglas Lewis passed away peacefully with his daughters at home on August 1, 2025. Abiding by his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Riverside Park Shelter #6.

He was born the son of Edward and Viola (Heuertz) Lewis-Peterson on July 24, 1945 in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1964. He was honorably discharged from the US Navy in 1967. Doug married Jacgueline Bartle in June of 1969. To this union one son and two daughters were born.

Doug worked for various grocery stores and managed Bonanza Restaurant in Sioux City. He also worked for John O'Conner food brokerage out of Omaha and at MCI in Sergeant Bluff, where he made lifelong friends, before starting his own landscaping and lawn care service. His landscaping talent and unique ideas can be seen throughout Sioux City and the surrounding areas.

He had great friendships and support from Ray Turner and cousins, Dan and Pigeon Heuertz and Gary Heuertz.

Doug loved spending time with family and friends. His grandchildren brought him the greatest joy. He also enjoyed being out in nature, digging for relics, collecting rocks, and was an avid gardener.

Doug is survived by his daughters, Shellie Lewis and Sean Aspleaf of Sioux City, IA and Jeanette Pence and Michael Pence of Princeton, IA; grandchildren, Jaryn Ringler of Sioux City, IA and Emily Archer and Eli Pence of Princeton, IA; nephew, Sage Lewis; and siblings, Jay Lewis, Steve and Allison Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Shannon Bartle; brother, Clark Lewis; and step-father, Johnny Peterson.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to St. Croix Hospice for their wonderful care and kindness.
