Dorothy "Pat" M. Moores

December 7, 1931 — November 1, 2023

Sergeant Bluff

Dorothy “Pat” M. Moores, 91 of Sergeant Bluff, IA passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Her memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Friday, November 10, 2023 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE.

Pat was born the daughter of Charles and Lula (Hettinger) Mills on December 7, 1931 in Lansing, Michigan. She graduated from Holt High School in 1949. Pat married Reverend James “Jim” Moores on September 1, 1951 in Holt, Michigan. Jim’s career as a Methodist minister kept the family on the move. Their many moves included various towns in Michigan, Iowa, Maryland and Nebraska. They eventually retired to their dream home on Lincoln Way in Sioux City in 1990.

Pat was a loving wife and mother, staying home to raise her five children. She felt that it was very important for her children to have her at home with Jim working so much. After the kids were in school, she worked as a nurse’s aide and for several banks over the years.

Her love of animals was shared with her children. This was especially evident when Pat and Jim opened a pet store in Alliance, NE called “Pat’s Pet Shoppe” She not only taught her children how to care for the animals but provide customer service and how to use the lost art of counting back change. She always had a cat in her life and her last pet was a cat named Abby that she and Jim raised from a kitten.

She enjoyed sewing and painting, especially hand-tinting old black and white photos. She made many dresses for her daughters over the years. She was also a great baker. Her family loved when she made her mother’s recipes for chocolate chip cookies, Chocolate cake with Grandma’s special frosting and coffee cake.

Another favorite thing to do was travel with Jim; a couple trips to Hawaii (one for their 25th Anniversary), Germany and many destinations across the U.S.

Pat is survived by her children, Deborah (James) Bohaboj of Blair, NE, Cheryl Little of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Betty (Terry) Taylor of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Amie Moores of Elwood, NE, and Richard (Amy) Moores of Sioux City, IA; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; sisters, Betty and Donna; brother, Kenneth; and twin brothers in infancy.
