Derrill J. Townley passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at a local care center. He had been living independently on his farm until a recent fall and would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 25 days.
Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 6, 2023 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation with the family present will be Sunday, February 5, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 at the funeral home. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Derrill was born in Sioux City, IA on February 26, 1923, the son of Harold J. Townley and Hazel A. (Pence) Townley. He attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Central High School in 1941. He married Dolores Richter in 1946. The couple loved ballroom dancing and were members of a dance club. Derrill and Dolores celebrated 74 years together before her passing in 2021. Derrill lived on the Family Century Farm where he retired in 2013 after 72 years of farming. In his earlier years he attained his private pilot’s license and sometimes landed his airplanes on his own farm. He also enjoyed bowling in the Leeds Booster League for many years.
Survivors are his children: Donald (Susan) Townley of Sioux City and Carol (Larry) Kindig of Omaha, NE; grandchildren: Ted (Ingrid) Townley, Paul (Kerri) Townley, Amy (Nick) Bellenbaum, Matt (Wendy) Kindig, and Becky (Brian) Cotton; great grandchildren: Lawson, Evan, Meredith, Lindsey, George, Abe, Madeline, Lucy, Claire, Henry, Brandon, Sammy, Aubree, Miles, Jaycey, Kynli, and Laynie; sister Lois (Dar) Hartman of Hinton, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
