Derek was born on March 29, 1965 in Ft. Riley, Kansas. He spent most of his life in South Sioux City, graduating with the Class of 1983. He began his career with Union Pacific, formally Chicago Northwestern, in 1995, where he worked for 20+ years.

Derek married Rhonda Smith on April 20, 2013 in South Padre Island, Texas. They made their home in South Sioux City, but enjoyed spending their winters in south Texas.

Derek had three wonderful children from a previous marriage who were the light-of-his-life. He loved them deeply and was proud of each of them. He also loved painting, Husker Football and his dogs. He loved "shooting the bull" and no one was a stranger to him.

Derek was diagnosed with Amyloidosis in 2018. With the support of his family, special friends, and his faith in God, he fought like a true warrior, defying medical science time and time again. He was the bravest, most courageous and loving man. He fought to the very end.

Derek is survived by his wife, Rhonda Koster of South Sioux City, Nebraska; son, Sean Holgate of Sioux City, Iowa; daughters, Kelsi Holgate of Denver, Colorado, and Josi Holgate of Sioux City, Iowa; dad, Leroy Koster of South Sioux City, Nebraska; brothers, Darren (Dori) Koster and Kyle Koster all of South Sioux City, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Beth Koster.
