Dennis Lee Kelly

February 12, 1950 — October 30, 2025

Sioux City, Iowa

Dennis Lee Kelly was born in Sioux City, IA on February 12, 1950, but his adventurous spirit took him to New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and finally back to Sioux City where he passed away on October 30th, 2025. His magnetic personality attracted friends wherever he went. He led an extraordinary life as an actor, musician, and acting coach. He was a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) and appeared in feature films including Harlem Nights with Eddie Murphy, recurring roles in television series such as the iconic show, Dynasty and Three’s Company, and multiple television commercials for international brands including IBM. He established the Renegade Actors Studio in Hollywood where he shared his expertise and love of his craft with his students, coaching them for auditions and performances.

A charismatic entertainer, he performed annually in the Sioux City Rock and Blues Reunion and the Tommy Bolin Music Festival with the East/West Band as a vocalist and performed at local clubs. He valued the brotherhood of musicians with whom he grew up including his brother, Phil Kelly and drummers Russell Bizzett and Johnnie Bolin, all members of the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dennis was a notorious rulebreaker and everyone has stories to tell, not all of which are fit to print but he was beloved by many who knew him personally and professionally.

His proudest accomplishment was helping to raise his children, Denielle and Michael. He was a committed cheerleader for their endeavors, always positive, encouraging, and supportive. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandson, Cash, whom he loved dearly and bragged about endlessly. His journey was not without struggles including a battle with cancer that threatened his strength and resilience for years.

Dennis is survived by his daughter, Denielle Kelly; son, Michael Kelly; grandson, Cash Kelly; sisters, Candi Mancini and Catherine Hemingway; brothers, Jeff Kelly and Phil Kelly. He now joins his beloved family members who have predeceased him: his father, Dr. John F. Kelly; mother, Catherine H. Kelly; and brother, Martin J. Kelly.

Dennis will be remembered for being the “hippest” guy in the room with his unique sense of style and fondness for great shoes and hats. He loved the spotlight and always shined when it was on him. He was one of a kind, talented, intense, charismatic, loving, and ornery. He will be sorely missed by the family and friends fortunate enough to know him.

Plans for a memorial service to be announced at a later date.  No flowers please but condolence cards may be sent to Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in care of Denielle Kelly.  Please sign the guest book and share your thoughts.
