Della Mahon was born on June 6, 1933, in Pender, Nebraska, to Wilmer and Louise (Novak) Potter. She spent her early years on a farm near Walthill, Nebraska, where she learned the values of hard work, kindness, and perseverance. It was there that her neighbors first invited her to church—an invitation she embraced wholeheartedly. At a young age, Della gave her life to her Savior, Jesus Christ, and remained a faithful disciple throughout her years. Her daily routines were rooted in worship, prayer, and studying scripture. She lived with intention, reflecting the image of Christ and seeking His guidance through the Holy Spirit and the mercy of God.
Della’s early adult life was marked by selfless service, with a heart full of compassion. She became a live-in nanny for numerous families in Sioux City, touching lives with her nurturing presence.
On June 5, 1955, Della married the love of her life, Edward Mahon. Together they built a home filled with devotion, laughter, and grace, raising three cherished daughters—Kathy, Jeanette, and Bethene. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and companionship, they shared 37 meaningful years side by side until Edward’s passing in August 1992.
A natural entrepreneur, Della had a gift for connecting with people. She sold everything from Avon, Amway to Barley Green—and by the end of any conversation, her gentle spirit and sincere enthusiasm had customers convinced they needed whatever she offered. Her passion for travel took her to many destinations, each trip enriching her life and relationships.
Above all, Della was a devoted follower of Christ and a cherished daughter of the Most High King. She loved music and reading. She gave generously and shared her time with others without ever expecting anything in return. Her love was unconditional, and her servant’s heart guided her to care for many in their elder years.
Della is survived by her daughters Kathy Nance (Ray), Jeanette Lee (Mark), and Beth Wilson (Curt Green-her beloved friend). She leaves behind four grandchildren: Jennifer Strickland (Jeremy), Caleb Nance (Cari), Adam Raub (Brandie), and Stephanie Lahm (Zachary). Her legacy also includes nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many treasured nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilmer and Louise Potter; her sisters Hazel Sorensen and Glora Mae Bentz; her brother Donald Potter; and her much-loved granddaughters, Sarah Lee and Talia Bergman.
Della’s life was a living testimony of faith, love, and generosity. Her gentle ways and steadfast devotion will be remembered and cherished by all who were blessed to know her.
