Dave was born on July 27, 1966, in Mason City, Iowa to Fran and Judy. The family moved with his two younger brothers Mike and Steve to South Sioux City, Nebraska, when Dave was 7. Dave attended St. Michaels school and served as an altar boy thru 8th grade then Bishop Heelan high school until graduation in 1984. After graduation, Dave joined the 185th Air National Guard and was able to travel to various locations across the United States along with Panama and Belgium. After 22 years of service Dave retired in March of 2007.

Dave experimented with various occupations until he found his niche in lawn care and landscaping. Dave enjoyed working with his Grandpa Cherland on the Cherland Farm in Burt Iowa. Working in the fields with his grandfather was one of his fondest memories of growing up. He continued at helping with harvest as much as he could until the death of his grandfather.

In 1996, Dave met the love of his life Renee Knight while playing trivia at Bob Roes. Dave pursued a reluctant Renee with stuffed animals tucked into her sunroof. Renee was hooked! They married on December 12, 2002, in Las Vegas.

In January of 1997, the duo established Executive Lawns. The business expanded in 2007 when they opened the store on Dakota Ave, offering swimming pools and plants. Dave had the vision of building a new location, this was how the Bloomers branch was formed. In 2011, Dave acted as the general contractor to build Renee the store of her dreams.

Friends and family were very important to him. Dave loved to socialize. He would share a laugh, cocktails, tell stories, and reflect on the past and talk about the future. He would always leave extra time to talk with customers, share a beverage, or help them in some way. Dave never met a stranger. always willing to help in any way he could.

Dave and Renee would travel to Market during the fall and winter to check out the new trends and products for their next year's inventories. During their travels Dave would always look up family and friends to meet. He never had a planned route, always leaving time to say "Hi" to a familiar face.

When traveling, Dave never left his golf clubs behind. He and Renee golfed almost everywhere they went and enjoyed meeting new people at the courses. When Renee insisted that he needed to slow down more and enjoy more free time, Dave hesitated for only a fraction of second before agreeing to lease a year-around spot in Okoboji. For the last 6 years summer weekends were always spent in Boji. Concerts, boating, golfing, bar hopping, and laughing. He never slowed down and always had fun. During the fall and winter is when Dave and Renee did most of their road-trip traveling.

Dave was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus as 4th Degree, and Home Builders Association. He had volunteered for the Dakota City and South Sioux City Fire Departments in the late 80's and early 90's. He donated his time to build the retaining wall at freedom park. Dave enjoyed visiting different American legions on his road journeys to collect License Plates including an American legion in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Renee; son Garrett and grandson Aiden; his mother Judy and stepfather Steve Rieff; brothers Mike (Stephanie) and Steve; stepbrother Dave (Lisa) Rieff; mother-in-Law Golda Knight; sisters-in-law Jennifer (Todd) Zwiener, Heather (Rick) Garneau, and Stacy Knight and her partner Patrick Bradly; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Kingston.
