David Lynn Olson

March 12, 1944 — April 10, 2025

Sioux City, Iowa

David L (Buck) Olson (81), the second of six children, was born on March 12, 1944 to Alfred L. and W. Irene Olson. Surrounded by family, he passed away on March 10, 2025 in Sioux City, Iowa following a short illness.

Buck was born and raised in Brush, Colorado on a family farm. Buck graduated from the Gary Elementary School and attended Brush High School, graduating in 1962. During his high school career, he earned letters for wrestling and football. Buck joined the US Army in 1966, and became a helicopter pilot. His overseas assignments included Vietnam where he was highly decorated and Germany. After his tours overseas, Buck returned to the US and was stationed in Alabama where he was an instructor pilot for the Army. After over 19 years in the Army, Buck retired and went into the family business of racing greyhounds with his father. Buck later went to school for heating and air conditioning repair and started working for the US Post Office until retirement.

During retirement, Buck enjoyed spending time visiting his brother, sisters, and grandchildren. Traveling back to Colorado was one of his favorite things to do. He also enjoyed fishing and crafting with wood and leather with his son, but his greatest love may have been the Denver Broncos.

He is survived by daughters Alexa Olson of Alabama, Veronica (Zach) Kappler of South Dakota; one son, Matthew of Iowa; and two grandchildren, Ella and Evan Kappler; brother John (Betty) Olson of Kansas, Jane Golden of South Dakota; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Irene, sisters Priscilla Callahan, Judy Mesmer, Elaine Meyer and Diana Wood.

A private memorial will be celebrated by family at a later date.
