David Norman "Dave" "Blackjack" Lowery

David Norman “Dave” “Blackjack” Lowery, 69, of Sioux City passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at a local hospital. A Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Dave was born on August 22, 1951 in Sioux City, to David and Helen Lowery. He graduated from Westwood in Sloan in 1969, and went on to study environmental services at Phillips University. He married Theresa Ann Garnett on November 13, 1976; the two later divorced. He later married Jackie Potts, and the two later divorced. He married Sonya M. Lowery on December 10, 2013 and the two were married until his death.

 

He grew up in Salix, Iowa, spent years in Enid, Oklahoma, and later moved to Sioux City where he lived until his death.

 

He worked mostly as a cab driver, first for Checker Cab, and later for Action Taxi. He had previously worked for the water treatment plant, both here in Sioux City and in Enid, OK. He also worked for a time in house painting.

 

Dave served our country from October 1969-1971 as a radio mechanic, where he served on the submarine USS Plunger (SSN 595). In 1971, he transferred to the Navy Reserves. He was honorably discharged in 1975.

 

Survivors include his wife, Sonya Lowery of Sioux City; a sister, Jane Tomlinson; oldest daughter, Laura Lower-O’Connor (Brian) of Sioux City; daughter, Jacquelyn Elizabeth Looman of Edmond, OK; son, Joshua David Lowery of Edmond, OK; daughter, Jennifer Maxine Lowery of Enid, OK; daughter, Elizabeth Hines of Sioux City; son, Darren Kranz of Beresford, SD; son, Chad Kranz, of Beresford, SD; son, Robert Fortin of Sioux City; daughter, Laura Fortin of Sioux City; daughter, Ashia Benson of Sioux City; daughter, Aryanna Lowery of Sioux City; 25 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Helen; and a cousin, Les Lowery.
