David L. Johnson, 74, of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at a local hospital. Memorial Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Army immediately following the memorial service. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. David was born on August 10, 1949 in Sioux City, to John and Norma (Ballinger) Johnson. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1967. After graduation, he served in the United States Army from 1967-1970 as a diesel mechanic, during which time he served in Vietnam.
David was a diesel mechanic for various companies, including Mack Trucking, Peterbilt, Cummins (New York State), and Waste Management. He worked for 12 years as a claims adjuster for Great West Casualty Company until his retirement. Following his retirement, David was co-owner of J&N Remodeling in Sioux City.
He married Carolyn Mackey on November 7, 1971 in Warners, New York. The two lived in New York state for six years before returning to Sioux City.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sioux City.
David loved his family and grandchildren; in his free time, he enjoyed camping, hunting, boating, and carpentry projects.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Johnson of Sioux City; his daughter, Marjorie Johnson; grandchildren: Sydney Woodard, MacKenna Johnson, Alexander Johnson, and Isabelle Johnson; sister: Mary Stock (Tom), all of whom are from Sioux City; an uncle: Eldon Johnson of Denver, CO; sister-in-law, Jackie Johnson; brother-in-law, Daniel Mackey (Barb) of Warner, NY; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters: Nancy and Mary Jane Johnson; brother, Daniel Johnson and his wife, Joanne, of Sioux Falls; and his parents-in-law.
