Darwin D. Solomon, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, in Sioux City, IA, at the age of 88. Born on July 30, 1937, in Sioux City to John Herman and Elma Rebecca (Craft) Solomon, Darwin grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School.
Darwin’s career was marked by dedication and hard work. He began at Wincharger in Sioux City and later transitioned to Dressed Beef, Inc. His journey continued as he became a truck driver for Ruan's and eventually worked several years at Industrial Molasses, now known as Westway. He dedicated himself tirelessly to his work until his retirement on December 31, 2024.
On September 9, 1955, Darwin married his beloved wife, Emaline (Monk) Solomon, in Sioux City and this union was blessed with three children. Darwin was a proud father and grandfather. He cherished his family deeply, particularly his wife Emaline, with whom he shared 70 years of love and partnership.
A man of sincere faith, Darwin was a longtime member of Wesley Global Methodist Church in Sioux City, where he found community and support. Known for his welcoming spirit, he never knew a stranger and was always eager to lend a helping hand or share a laugh. His easy-going nature and love for joking and cutting up with people contributed to the warmth and joy he brought to those around him.
Darwin had a passion for the outdoors, which led the family to move to their farm in Plymouth County, just outside of Sioux City in 1966. There, he spent many hours bailing hay and raising livestock, hobbies that allowed him to appreciate the beauty of nature. He was also known for his green thumb, taking pride in his yard and cultivating a large garden.
In his younger years, Darwin enjoyed playing softball, dancing with Emaline, and camping as a family. The couple also loved playing cards, further creating lasting memories with their loved ones. Even in his later years, Darwin maintained an active lifestyle, frequently tinkering in his garage.
He is survived by his wife, Emaline of Sioux City; son, Randy (Kathy) Solomon of Sioux City; daughter, Cheryl (Don) Gamble of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. In addition, Darwin is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Rick Solomon, and four siblings: Charles, Edna, Darrell, and Joyce.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with family present at 6:00 PM and a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. A funeral service celebrating Darwin’s life will take place on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Wesley Global Methodist Church, at 10:30 AM. Following the service, there will be a luncheon and time of fellowship. Burial will take place at Logan Park Cemetery.
