Darold Robert "Bob" Hamar, 76 of Omaha, Nebraska, formerly of the Siouxland Area, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2025, surrounded by family.
Funeral Services will be at 3 pm Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in SSC, NE with Pastor Joshua Potter officiating and Military Honors offered by the US Army and American Legion Post 307 of SSC, NE. Interment will be at a later date. Visitation with the family present, will begin at 2 pm on Saturday prior to services at the funeral home.
Darold was born on the 8th of October in 1948 in Sioux City. He attended school in South Sioux City, Nebraska until 8th grade before attending St. John’s Military School in Salina, Kansas. Bob then completed 9th grade at Judson School in Scottsdale, Arizona before returning to South Sioux City, Nebraska for his Sophomore and Junior years.
In March of 1966 he decided to join the US Army and went to Fort Leonard Wood bootcamp in Kansas City, Missouri. He returned home in July of 1966 to marry Nancy Fredricksen. Bob then went to Fort Benning, Georgia to complete Airborne training. Before he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. There, they welcomed their first daughter, Michele. After his training he went to Fort Campbell, Kentucky and transferred to the 101st Screaming Eagles Division. He left for Vietnam in December of 1967.
On May 1, 1968 while in Vietnam, Bob suffered an injury. He was taken to a ship and then flown to Oji Hospital in Tokyo, Japan. Bob was then flown to Forst Riley Hospital in Kansas. He remained there until he was well enough to come home.
In June 1971, Bob and Nancy welcomed their second daughter Kimberlee back in Sioux City, IA. Bob worked for his dad at Hamar Construction until it was sold. He then went to work at the Sioux City post Office until he retired. Bob and Nancy then moved to Omaha.
He loved being with family and friends, boating, vacations, cookouts, and target shooting.
Survivors include his wife: Nancy (Fredricksen) Hamar; daughters: Michele (Steve) Wendte, Kimberlee (Thad) Trosper; grandchildren: Anthony and Schylar Hamar, Kiefer Schuttpelz, Ethan Wendte, Elizabeth and Katheryn Trosper; great grandkids: Maranda Hamar, Zayden Harbeck, Xaiver and Noah Hamar, Nikelye Schuttpelz, and great-great granddaughter Zariah; and sisters: Luann Jager and Jodi Doughty.
He was preceded in death by parents Darold Hamar and Mary Forbes, sister: Sherry Monk, in-laws Sig and Esther (Bobier) Fredricksen, and Katheryn’s life partner Tony Lyle.
Bob was awarded the Purple Heart Badge, the Parachute Badge, a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, and a Sharpshooter (Rifle) Combat Infantryman Badge.
