Darice D. Fickett

July 12, 1955 — August 6, 2025

Sioux City, Iowa

After being told she had six months to live in 2019, Darice Dawn Fickett went on to live six more years– peacefully leaving this world on August 6th, 2025, but definitely not without a fight. She was born on July 12th, 1955, in Onawa, Iowa to the parents of Charles and Gloria Rowland. Between them and her beloved daughter, Sherri, Darice is off to have fun with many people who love and miss her dearly.

If you were lucky to know Darice, you would know she was loving, playful, spunky, spicy, caring, compassionate, and selfless. For many people she was their go to when they needed something. A hug, a laugh, a warm meal, a place to stay, or a shoulder to cry on–Darice was your gal. Her warmth extended to anyone who needed it, without judgement or expectation of what she would get in return. That pure love she had for others was a gift to this world and something that could have healed nations.

Despite only having a handful of kids and grandkids, Darice took on the role of mother and grandmother to countless individuals that she met along her life’s journey. Extended family members, coworkers, random kids off the street– all met with great compassion, love, and empathy. She did not preach that she had all the right answers or that there was one way of doing things. She let life unfold and took it as it came, with flare, controlled chaos, and unconditional love.

In addition to being a great mother, she was also a fantastic sister. One of four girls, plus one brother, Darice spoke highly of her childhood and the sisters that helped raise her. She beamed with a childlike joy when they were around, exemplifying the origin story of her spunky demeanor. As her family expanded with in-laws and children, Darice’s loyalty and heart only grew.

Darice will miss you all, but there is one she will miss the most. Thomas Earl Fickett and Darice Dawn (Rowland) were married on June 9th, 1972, and spent 53 wonderful years together. They met young and took off fast. They faced hardships, victories, loss, and hope. It took time but they eventually found their footing, compounding into a shining example of love that most people only dream of. For 53 years they lived it, until the very end. Of all the hats she wore, we know her favorite was being Tom’s other half.

The last few years of her life certainly don’t define her, but it is important to mention how incredibly strong she was in her battle. Her diagnosis of both ovarian and then lung cancer were devastating to those around her but only made her more determined in kicking their butt. She explored new treatments, tests, and medications, helping evolve the efforts of cancer research throughout her ongoing struggles. This act of bravery is what defines a hero, and she certainly was.

Do yourself a favor…

Remember our golden girl in the moments you want to give up, and in the times you’re glad you didn’t.

Feel her arms wrapping around you when you’re sad or lonely, and know she would do anything in her power to make your day a little brighter.

Breathe her in when you pass beautiful roses or an apple cake baking in the oven.

Hear her in the tune of Brooks and Dunn or big joyous laughter.

See her when the first bit of morning light comes over the horizon and starts to brighten your day.

She may be gone but her legacy lives on through all who have been touched by her.

A profound thank you to her friends and family for all the joy and kindness they bestowed upon our sweet lady. There is no doubt that love kept her here a little longer.
