He was born March 3, 1931 to Frank (Beanie) and Lois Chapman in Lake City, IA, where he grew up and where he met the love of his life, fellow classmate Coleen Lawrence. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1949 then attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, for 2 years. It was during a revival there that he accepted Christ as his Savior, which changed him and guided him the rest of his life. Before entering Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, he and Coleen were married September 9, 1951.
After earning his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1954, he was drafted into the Army. His son Tommy died during birth during this time. He served mainly at Ft. Chaffee, Ft. Smith, AR. His daughter Diane was born there, and his son Tim was born in Mt. Pleasant, IA where he had his first practice. They then moved to Des Moines where he worked at Morgan Optical.
Dan and Coleen became involved with Westover Baptist Church where they developed lifelong friendships with some of the other young couples. In 1964 the family moved to Sioux City where Dan worked many years at Duling Optical, then Vision Optical. The family attended Central Baptist Church where he served in many capacities over the years, notably leading the Building Committee when they built the church on Pawnee Place.
Dan and Coleen were active in the community, were involved with golfing, motorcycling, and boating. Dan became a Ham Radio Operator, WDOAQJ. After retiring in 1993, Dan stayed busy being involved with Adult Literacy, the American Red Cross as an ERV driver- he went to the floods in CA and WV- Habitat for Humanity, Art Splash, the Coast Guard Auxiliary (he could go out on the river without having to own a boat!) and Awanas. Coleen passed away in 2012. Dan continued to go to coffee at Hy-Vee, the Senior Center to play cards, dance, and exercise, the Betty Strong offerings, and the concerts at the Band Shell in the summers. Dan and Coleen were a wonderful example of a loving Christian marriage; Dan was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be missed!
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Chapman of Tomball, TX; daughter, Diane (Rich) Lloyd of Andrews, TX; and son, Tim of Sioux City, who took wonderful care of Dan in his last years. He is also survived by grandchildren: Kaitlin Lloyd-Leva (Matt) of Austin, TX, Nathan Lloyd (Ashley) of Odessa, TX, Brenna Jaco of Lubbock, TX, Caroline Lloyd (Nick Gladman) of Dix Hills, NY, and Emily Chapman; great-grandchildren: Jude Leva, Jack Leva, Emilia Lloyd, Kedric Lloyd, Logan Jaco, and Kennah Gladman.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Corda Dodd, his brother Gary Chapman, his wife, Coleen, and his son Thomas Edward.
