Daniel P. McCarthy, 93, of Sioux City and formerly of Jackson, NE, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2024 at his residence. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jackson. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Mohr & Becker Hunt Funeral Home. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City. Daniel was born on January 27, 1931 in Randolph, Nebraska, the son of Daniel J. and Helen (Lamb) McCarthy. The family moved to Jackson, Nebraska, when Daniel was nine years old and he remained a Jackson resident until 1957, when he moved to Sioux City. He married Marilyn Eufers on May 4, 1957 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City. Marilyn passed away on November 14, 1993 in Sioux City.
Daniel served in the United States Navy from 1951-1959, serving four years active duty during the Korean War and four years in the Reserves. Following his service years, he joined the VFW in Jackson and was involved with them as well as the American Legion.
Daniel graduated from high school in Jackson, NE and received his bachelor’s degree from Morningside College in 1963.
Daniel worked in sales of tools and welding products for Air products, Fuchs machinery and for several years for Sioux City Iron until his retirement. He had a very strong work ethic.
In his free time, Daniel enjoyed dancing, spending time at the family farm, going to family gatherings. He also enjoyed fixing and making things from about anything. He was a “jack of all trades”. He was also quite a jokester and enjoyed teasing just about everyone. He was very proud of his Irish roots. His favorite Gaelic saying when someone was about to leave was “Dia Dhuit” or “God go with you”.
He is survived by his children: Jill McCarthy of Sioux City; Daniel L. McCarthy of Jackson, NE; Dennis McCarthy (Sherry) of Sergeant Bluff, IA; Elizabeth Brenden of Whiting, IA; and Greg McCarthy (Kathy) of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; siblings: Alice Reeg, Ellen Livingston and Jack (Madonna) McCarthy; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn McCarthy; a daughter, Joan McCarthy; parents, Daniel and Helen; brother, Tom McCarthy; sister, Ruth Rooney; sister, Judy McCarthy; sister, Caroline McCarthy; sister, Marjorie Loutsch; and sister, Mary Rose Morgan.
The family would like to thank St. Croix Hospice for their great care of Daniel.
