Clare B. Sherwood, 87, of South Sioux City, NE, formerly of Ponca, NE passed away at Regency Square Care Center on Monday, November 5, 2012.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 9, 2012 at Evangelical Free Church in Ponca, NE with Rev. Dennis Ritchey officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, IA. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca. Online condolences to the family may be posted at www.mohrfuneralhome.com.Clare was born in Ponca, NE on September 26, 1925, the daughter of John F. and Esther M. (Putnam) Roth. She grew up in Ponca and graduated from Ponca High School. She attended Wayne State College, earning her teaching certificate. She taught at the old one room schoolhouse north of Ponca (Woodland School). Clare was married to Dwight Mittan until his passing in 1979. She moved back to Ponca in 1981 when she married and had a wonderful life with John (Franklin) Sherwood. In their retirement they enjoyed traveling and just spending time together until Franklin passed away in 2010.She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church and the Free Church Women's Ministries in Ponca, and was a former member of PEO. She enjoyed oil painting, writing, traveling, taking care of, and spending time with her grandchildren.Survivors include three children, Roger (Bev) Mittan of Lincoln, NE, Daniel (Darlene) Mittan of Louisville, Mississippi and Susan (Mike) Watkins of Ponca, NE; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Clare was preceded in death by her parents, John and Esther Roth; her husbands, Dwight Mittan and Franklin Sherwood; and her brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Babe Roth.
