Obituary

Harley “Clair” Atwood, age 87, passed away on February 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hard work, humor, and devotion to family. He was born on June 24, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa, to his late parents, Harley and Dorothy Atwood. Clair carried his Riverside roots with pride throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Myrtle Joan Atwood, with whom he shared a life grounded in love and commitment for 59½ years. Together, they built a family that became the center of his world.

Clair graduated from Central High School with the Class of 1956. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959. His time in service reflected the quiet strength and steady character that defined him throughout his life. He believed in responsibility, loyalty, and doing what needed to be done without complaint. Those values followed him long after his military service ended.

For over 50 years, Clair was a member of the Asbestos Workers Union, Local 57. He took immense pride in his trade and the brotherhood it represented. Taking only a brief break from insulating, he co-owned and operated True Value Hardware in LeMars, Iowa, for approximately three years alongside his lifelong friends, Bob and Karen Clark. Whether working with his hands in the trade or serving customers in the store, Clair’s work ethic was steady and dependable. His career was not just a job; it was a testament to perseverance, craftsmanship, and commitment.

Clair enjoyed time on the golf course, where the fellowship and stories shared often meant more than the final score. He played in three leagues a week. His courses of choice included Sun Valley Golf Course, Two Rivers Country Club, Covington Golf Course, and Hidden Acres Golf Course. Whether spending time outdoors camping and fishing or gathering with family, he valued the relationships around him most. He will be remembered for many things, especially his yearly Christmas decorations, never turning down a hug, and always sharing a laugh. Each of these found a way to ease tension and bring joy into everyday life.

Clair was a faithful servant of his beloved Westlawn Presbyterian Church. He served the church in numerous capacities and was a friend to everyone who came through its doors. Throughout the years, he was always willing to help others.

More than anything else, Clair was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his three children: William “Bill” (Becky), Michael “Mike” (Loretta), and Lorna Jones (Tony). He was the proud grandfather of Tony, Lindsey, Jennifer, Melissa, and Andrew, and the cherished great-grandfather of eleven great-grandchildren. Over the past four years, he spent cherished time with his classmate and special friend, Gail Berger. He is also survived by his sisters, Donna Kamm and Nancy Johnson. Nothing brought him greater joy than watching his family grow and succeed.

In addition to his wife Joan and his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Rodger and Larry Atwood; his father-in-law, Joseph Schimberg; and his mother-in-law, Laura Schimberg.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the example he set through a life well lived. His legacy of faith, loyalty, hard work, and love will continue in the generations that follow.

Clair’s family will receive friends at a public visitation at Westlawn Presbyterian Church (2521 W. 4th Street, Sioux City, IA 51103) at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026. A memorial service to honor and remember his life will follow at 11:00 a.m. At the conclusion of the service, all are invited to a luncheon in the Westlawn Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. A graveside service will then be conducted at Memorial Park Cemetery, 6605 Morningside Avenue, Sioux City, IA 51106. All services will be officiated by the Reverend Jason Cunningham. Arrangements are being overseen by Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd., Sioux City, IA 51104.
