Christina L. Merchant

Christina Louise Merchant, 41, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of South Sioux City, NE, passed away Monday, November 7, 2022, at a Sioux Falls hospital following a courageous two-year health battle. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 13, 2022, from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 14, 2022, at 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Albaton, Iowa. 

Christina was born April 7, 1981, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Ron and Teresa (Koeppen) Merchant. She graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1999. Christina went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science from Bellevue University in 2014. Christina received her Master of Science Degree in Clinical Counseling from Bellevue University in 2019. Christina was employed at Rosecrance Jackson Recovery in Sioux City, Iowa, and most recently at Seasons Center for Behavioral Health in Sioux City, Iowa, before the onset of her illness. Christina was a fierce advocate for her patients and cherished the many friendships she made with her co-workers. On February 9, 2011, Christina received the greatest gift when she gave birth to her daughter Hannah Louise. Hannah was the light of her life and the bond they share is amazing and beautiful.

Christina enjoyed many things in life which included traveling, music, Nebraska Football, her Chicago Bears, a fierce love of dogs, movies, and television programs (she never missed an episode of Judge Judy or On Patrol Live), and food. She loved trying new restaurants and had been given the playful nicknames “Restaurant Rachael” and “Supermarket Sally”. Christina had a heart of gold. She put others needs above her own even during her illness. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Hannah, of Sioux Falls, SD.; her father, Ron, of Sioux Falls, SD.; sister, Mindy Merchant, of Sioux Falls, SD.; paternal grandmother, Ernestine Merchant, of South Sioux City, NE.; aunts and uncles, Charles Merchant, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Sioux City, IA.; Randy Merchant, Sr. and his wife Patricia of Sioux City, IA.; Rick Merchant of Sioux Falls, SD.; and Russell Koeppen of South Sioux City, NE.; cousins, Lisa Ali and her husband Mohammed of Ames, IA.; Stacy Vogt and her husband Chris of Sioux City, IA.; and Randy Merchant, Jr. and his fiancé Lisa Logsdon of Dakota City, NE.; her best friend Lora Curry of Sioux City, IA.; her “brothers from another mother” Kelly Matney, of Sioux Falls, SD. and Kevin Matney of South Sioux City, NE.; her bonus parents, Mick and Marchell Matney, of South Sioux City, NE.; and numerous great aunts, great uncles, and cousins.

Christina was preceded in death by her mother, Teresa Merchant; paternal grandfather, Charles Merchant, Sr.; maternal grandfather, Neil Koeppen; and maternal grandmother, Elaine Koeppen.

Pallbearers will be Randy Merchant, Jr., Kelly Matney, Kevin Matney, Mohammed Ali, Chris Vogt, Lora Curry, and Joe Preston.
